Rider Education

Meet John VanDeusen, Chapter D's Rider Educator.
John and his wife Pam are no strangers to training.  They are both active in a volunteer fire department in their home town.  Not only is John our Chapter's Rider Educator, he along with our Chapter Director Rick Reardon, spent many days training in the first New York District Rider Certification Program to become Advanced Rider Course (ARC) Instructors!    Our chapter is very fortunate to have such dedicated individuals to foster our safety and training.
If you've never been to one of our Chapter Gatherings you should come to hear all the exciting topics John brings to the Gatherings each month.  You can also find John's articles in our Monthly Newsletters
Our most recent Co Rider course was presented by John and Rick during Tech Day with Chapter T & D.  Since there was rain that day the demonstration was inside. (also note that they were not wearing the advisable riding gear!

WHAT IS THE HONDA SMART TRAINER?

The Honda SMART Trainer or Safe Motorcyclist Awareness and Recognition Trainer is a computerized traffic simulator that allows beginning riders the opportunity to operate a motorcycle in real life situations without the real world consequences. The Honda SMART Trainer uses state of the art software and actual Honda motorcycle controls to give the rider an opportunity to learn basic motorcycle control operations such as clutch, brake, throttle, and gearshift coordination in a computer simulation environment. It also offers intermediate or experienced riders the opportunity to operate in more risky traffic situations giving them a chance to evaluate and address the various safety scenarios in a controlled environment.

Controls include:

  • Twist Throttle
  • High/Low Beam Lights
  • Stop Switch
  • Foot Brake
  • Gear Shift Lever
  • Start Button
  • Clutch
  • Hand Brake
  • Turn Signals
  •

 WHAT DOES IT SIMULATE?

The Honda SMART Trainer simulates 17 different riding scenarios. Two of the scenarios are for beginning riders: Clutch Operation & City Riding. The remaining 15 scenarios are hazard prediction courses testing the riders’ accident avoidance and prediction skills. Each of these scenarios can be run in 3 different modes: Day, Night, & Fog. In addition the Honda SMART Trainer offers the rider a choice of operating a standard Manual Shift motorcycle or an Automatic scooter. In total the SMART Trainer offers 164 different operating scenarios, giving the rider many chances to get it wrong in simulation, but not in real life. With many different scenarios and real-life controls, the Honda SMART Trainer offers riders invaluable training in a structured environment.
